Balay Tulugan sa Madaguing.

Madagway ha pag-uma dini ta tulugan ta Madaguing [Welcome to our home in Madaguing]. Stuck along the road going up the hill, this is the wooden signage that greets everyone who visits the newly constructed tulugan or home of the Higaonon tribe.

Today, the Balay Tulugan is happily inaugurated by the Higaonon tribe and the people who helped in the setting up of this tribal hall in Barangay Madaguing, Claveria, Misamis Oriental.

Barangay Captain Samuel Abrogar was very thankful that a tribal hall can now serve its purpose. After a tree-planting activity, a turn-over ceremony was made where the keys of the hall was passed on from Balay Mindanaw’s President Kaloy Manlupig, to LGU Claveria’s representative Vice Mayor Len Ong, to Barangay Captain Abrogar and finally to Datu Matagon, the caretaker and tribal council leader of the Higaonon tribe of Madaguing.

Turnover ties.

This has been the dream of most people in the barangay and the neighboring communities. Eighty percent of the total population of the barangay comprise the Higaonon tribe. After two years of on-and-off construction, due to limitation of funds, this tribal hall now stands on top of a hill, overlooking the Kabulig River on one side and the Tabok Cluster barangays of Claveria on the other side.

With a floor area of 30-by-60 feet, this tulugan was built by the community members themselves with the determination and perseverance of its Barangay and the Tribal Councils. Abrogar was inspired then by the tulugan in Barangay Sangalan located in the hinterlands of Gingoog City when he attended its inauguration in May 2003. After three years, a tribal hall with a similar design is now blessed by his local people through a ritual called tampuda, which tried to solve the long standing conflict of the two clans of Barangay Minalwang and Madaguing. This ritual was made by four datus: Buotan, Pignauwan, Kalutan and Matagon.

Witnessing the inaugural ceremony are the tribal leaders and barangay councils of Barangays Rizal, Panampawan, Minalwang, Tamboboan and the Ane-i, all from Claveria. Also present were the Sangguniang Bayan Member of Claveria, Orvil Achias, ABC President Pempe Casino, representatives of various support organizations like LANDCARE, MOSCAT and the World Agroforestry Center based in Claveria. The construction was jointly supported by the Philippine Business for Social Progress, Local Government of Claveria, Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental, Barangay Council of Madaguing and Balay Mindanaw Foundation, Inc.
