Dear Friends,

We have been releasing daily updates/reports since December 19. We have been doing this in the spirit of transparency and accountability. This is also our own way of honoring and acknowledging your kind support. We hope that these updates have helped in keeping you informed and involved.

We will be sharing with you a synthesis/recap of these reports by Monday, a month after the disaster. Our work of responding to the disaster has entered the phase of helping rebuild people’s lives, and helping build the capacities and resiliency of communities. We will be sharing with you our immediate, medium and long term plans soon. Thank you for your continuing accompaniment.

Relief and Operations Updates:

Yesterday, we distributed 476 liters of drinking water to the 119 families staying at Tent Communities 1, 2 and 3 in Indahag. The fire truck from FIBECO also continued to provide water supply to Communities 1 and 2. Next week we will be distributing mixed goods from Korea to the 3 tent communities.

Through the Skills Management Institute (SMI), we have also shared 351 sacks of clothing for Barangays Buenavista and Lingating in the Municipality of Baungon, Bukidnon that were also affected by Typhoon Sendong. The local government officials in these barangays approached us to say that they have been receiving significantly less support than the affected barangays in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan Cities.

We have also referred 61 families in Sentro Iponan for possible IOM rehabilitation support worth P7,000 per family.

Tent Communities Updates:

1. Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WASH) Cluster

Yesterday morning, OXFAM-Humanitarian Response Consortium (HRC), UNICEF, CRS and Balay Mindanaw met with the WASH committee of Indahag Tent Community 1 to discuss ways of addressing WASH issues of the camp. The meeting ended with the team providing 8 pit latrines (one to be put up tomorrow) and 8 women bath cubicles. Other support groups are invited to help provide cost of materials for the other 7 pit latrines.

The level of bacteria in the water regularly provided has been tested using a test kit. This will be done at least weekly.

Cash for Work: A system on how this will be managed so that it does not become a source of conflict inside the camp has been discussed. A small contingency fund will be maintained for emergency needs in the tent communities.

2. Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) Cluster

A community kitchen was installed in Indahag 2 yesterday. Community kitchens will also be set up in Indahag 1 today, and at the Regional Science High School on Monday. Eight tents are still vacant, subject to validation of families by SAC

A case of chicken pox was reported in Indahag 2, doctor has visited, and patient is now isolated.

3. Protection/gender-based violence cluster

The following issues have been raised: no women cubicles in most tents/centers; tarps for the covered courts too high (8 meters from the ground); act of de-clogging families in schools seemed just transferring families from one evacuation center to another evacuation center

An assessment tool of what had been done by all service providers re Sendong disaster response is now being developed.

4. Shelter cluster

Habitat for Humanity is partnering with BMFI for repair of partially damaged houses of 200 families. A Certification from the Punong Barangay stating they can rebuild or resettle back on their areas is required. Shelter kits costing P3,000.00 consisting of tools, G.I. sheets, etc. will be provided to families willing to give counterpart labor. We will explore possible cash for work support from DSWD.

Resources Updates:

As of today, we have received total cash donations of P2,367,579.90, non-cash donations of P6,400,647 and cash pledges amounting to P1,803,480. We have received information that 19 sacks of goods from the Provincial Government of Basilan will be arriving today.

We have sent acknowledgement receipts to those who have generously given their support through Balay Mindanaw. Kindly call our attention if you have not received acknowledgement from us.

Thank you very much.

We refuse to be victims. We choose to be resources.
