About 70 participants from
the academe, religious sector, senior citizens, cooperatives, and
people’s organizations gathered at the former RMI Auditorium last
September 23 for the first general assembly of the Transparency
& Accountability Network of the Civil Society in Dapitan, Inc.
(TANCSDI).
The assembly adopted the
theme “Revitalizing Sectoral Commitment to a Sustained Advocacy
for a Transparent and Accountable Governance.”
The objective of the assembly
was to have a better relationship among civil society and private
sectors and to strategize the TANCSDI initiatives in Dapitan City.
The said assembly presented
the brief history of the TANCSDI, presented all the activities
conducted, refined and approved the network’s sectoral agenda,
elected new sets of officers and drafted a one-year strategic plan
of the network.
In addition, Atty. Ruben B.
Legorio, the current prosecutor of Dapitan City, facilitated the
oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected executive officers. Fr.
Virgilio Belleno V.F. officiated the thanksgiving mass.
Aside from TANCSDI, other
groups involved in the event were the Kab-ot Gahum: Resource Center
for Empowerment and Development (RCED), The Asia Foundation (TAF),
and the Mindanao Coalition of Development NGO Networks (MINCODE).
TANCSDI was organized last
May 30, 2003. It is the outcome of the Transparent and Accountable
Governance Project undertaken by TAF. The said project covered seven
cities in Mindanao, Dapitan among them. It is to build civil society
and private sector constituencies to counter corruption and push
good governance aimed at economic growth and poverty alleviation.
Its basic objective is to maintain broad civil society and private
sector’s engagement for transparency and accountability at the
local and national level.
